We introduced Hudbay’s purpose statement to the world in our 2022 Annual Sustainability Report, published in May 2023, and launched it internally the same month. Focused on “our people, our communities and our planet,” we developed the statement through an extensive, consultative and lively process that started at an offsite meeting of the senior management team (SMT).
The SMT recognized that the Company’s vision statement, while accurate, did not reflect Hudbay’s potential for future growth, the importance of people and communities in its success, and the vital contribution that Hudbay, as a producer of essential metals, particularly copper, is making to the global fight against climate change and the transition to a net zero economy. The SMT agreed to replace the vision statement with a new purpose statement.
Internal stakeholder interviews were conducted with employees across all functional areas of the business to identify critical elements of Hudbay’s purpose: What are we in business for? What makes us different? Why do we exist?
The findings from the interviews were used to inform a OneImpact brainstorming session attended by 33 leaders in superintendent, manager and director roles across all business units. The session was centred around four premises – “We genuinely care…,” “We transform lives,” “We are essential to society,” and “We enable world-class production” – each of which reflected how Hudbay creates value for all its stakeholders.
The ideas and themes generated at the OneImpact session were reviewed and refined and eventually found expression in Hudbay’s purpose statement. As CEO Peter Kukielski noted in his statement accompanying the launch, our purpose “is a declaration of why we exist.” Produced through a thoughtful and inclusive process, our purpose will help unite and guide our activities as OneHudbay and provide a foundation we can build upon through our next 100 years.
